An Avulux lens

Why light matters

When you live with migraine, light isn’t just light.

Screens, office lighting and bright sun can make it hard to get through the day. And not all light affects you the same way.

As many as 90%

of people living with migraine experience light sensitivity.1

Up to 60%

of migraine attacks are triggered by light.2

Not all light is equal

Harvard research found that blue, amber and red light can intensify migraine, while a narrow band of green light can be soothing.3

That’s where Avulux comes in. It precisely filters blue, amber and red light and lets soothing green light through, to decrease the impact of migraine light sensitivity.

Worth knowing: Avulux lenses have a visible tint. They aren’t clear lenses, and they aren’t just a darker sunglass lens either. Here’s what wearing them is like.

How it works

Designed for migraine light sensitivity.

Most tinted lenses just dim everything evenly. Avulux was designed specifically for people living with migraine: it blocks light at 480nm (high blue) and 590nm (amber/red) and lets the rest of the visible spectrum through, including a narrow band of soothing green light.

2× better light quality*

Avulux blocks the most harmful wavelengths without also blocking the soothing light your eyes are comfortable with.

Colours stay true to life

Because Avulux filters specific bands rather than the whole spectrum, the world still looks like itself.

100% UV protection

Every Avulux lens blocks UV, indoors and out.

*Light quality compared with conventional light-filtering lenses, based on Avulux spectral testing.

Is Avulux right for you?

Made for people living with migraine who find light hard going.

Avulux is designed for people aged 12 and over who have been diagnosed with episodic migraine and find that light (screens, office lighting, bright sun) makes things harder.

A good fit if you…

  • Have been diagnosed with episodic migraine and are 12 or older
  • Find light makes living with migraine harder
  • Spend long hours on screens or under bright LED or fluorescent lighting
  • Want a tinted lens you can wear indoors, not just sunglasses
  • Care about seeing colours accurately
  • Want one lens for moving between indoors and out (Avulux Adapt)

Probably not the right choice if you…

  • Need a lens for night driving or low light (see below)
  • Want a completely clear lens

Before you buy

What wearing Avulux is really like.

We’d rather you know exactly what to expect before you buy.

They’re noticeably tinted

The tint is there to help keep your eyes and brain calm in bright light. At around 52% VLT, Avulux and Avulux Adapt (indoors) let through about half of the visible light, so people will be able to tell you’re wearing tinted lenses.

Colours look natural, with small differences

Most colours stay true to life. Because Avulux filters narrow bands of blue and amber, a few shades can look slightly different at first.

Give yourself time to adjust

The Avulux team suggests wearing Avulux for at least 2 weeks. If you’re used to wearing dark sunglasses indoors, a lighter pair will take some getting used to. Even though Avulux looks lighter, it filters more of the harmful light than darker sunglasses do, because it precisely targets the light most likely to trigger discomfort instead of dimming everything.

Adapt darkens with UV, not brightness

Like most photochromic lenses, Avulux Adapt reacts to UV light, so it darkens less behind a car windscreen and more on a bright day outside.

Not for night driving or low light

No Avulux lens is suitable for driving at night or in poor light. Lenses need to let through at least 75% of light for that, and all Avulux lenses are darker.

The science

The only clinically proven lens for migraine light sensitivity.†

Avulux was tested in a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted by an independent clinical research organisation. Physicians and engineers spent more than a decade developing the lens technology.

†Posternack C, et al. J Clin Neurosci. 2023;113:22–31 (NCT04341298). Conducted by an independent clinical research organisation across three clinical sites. The trial was sponsored by Avulux, Inc., and its authors include Avulux’s CEO and other equity holders. The favourable findings come from post-hoc analyses of participants.

Regulatory status

An FDA-authorised medical device.

In the US, FDA granted De Novo classification to Avulux as an over-the-counter Class I medical device (DEN250026).

Indications for Use: Avulux is a precision optical filter indicated to block light at 480 nm (high blue range) and 590 nm (red/amber range), while allowing light in the remaining visible color spectrum through, to decrease the impact of light sensitivity in patients diagnosed with episodic migraine aged 12 years of age and older. The use of the Avulux should not alter the usual care therapy of patients diagnosed with episodic migraine, including medication usage.

FDA authorisation does not constitute FDA endorsement.

Questions

Everything else you might be wondering.

Who is Avulux designed for?

Avulux was designed for people living with migraine light sensitivity. It is indicated to decrease the impact of light sensitivity in people aged 12 and older who have been diagnosed with episodic migraine, and it’s used alongside your usual migraine care, including medication.

Can I get Avulux in my prescription?

Yes. You can order prescription Avulux and Avulux Adapt lenses in any Ollie Quinn frame, online or in store. Avulux Atlas is available as a non-prescription lens only.

Which lens should I start with?

For one pair that does everything, choose Avulux Adapt. Indoors it matches the original Avulux lens, and it darkens automatically outside. If you’re mostly indoors and on screens, the original Avulux lens is the simplest choice. If you spend a lot of time around water, snow or strong glare, add Avulux Atlas as a dedicated outdoor pair.

How is Avulux different from blue-light glasses or sunglasses?

Blue-light glasses mainly target blue light. Sunglasses darken everything. Avulux filters specific bands in the blue and amber/red parts of the spectrum and lets the rest through, including a narrow band of soothing green light, so colours stay true to life and the lens is comfortable to wear indoors.

Can I wear Avulux Atlas indoors?

No. At around 22% VLT, Atlas is too dark for comfortable indoor wear, and polarised lenses can interfere with some LCD screens and digital displays. For indoors, choose Avulux or Avulux Adapt.

How does Avulux Adapt work?

Adapt contains photochromic molecules that react to UV light. Outside, the lens darkens automatically to around 15% VLT; back indoors it quickly fades back to the standard Avulux tint. As with most photochromic lenses, it darkens less behind a car windscreen, which blocks most UV.

Can I drive while wearing Avulux?

Avulux lenses can be worn for daytime driving, but no Avulux lens is suitable for driving at night or in poor light.

Does Avulux replace my migraine medication or treatment?

No. Avulux is intended to be used alongside, not instead of, your usual care for migraine. Its use should not change your medication or any other treatment. Speak to your doctor about your migraine care.

Are all three lenses clinically proven?

The base Avulux filtering technology that’s built into all three lenses has been clinically validated at the highest standard of testing — independent, double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled. Avulux Adapt adds photochromic adaptation, and Avulux Atlas adds polarization, both layered on top of the proven Avulux filtration. Only the base Avulux filter has gone through clinical validation (Avulux and Avulux Adapt in its non-activated state).

Do I need more than one pair?

Most people find one pair of Avulux or Avulux Adapt covers their day. If you spend a lot of time in very bright, high-glare places like on the water or in the snow, Avulux Atlas gives you glare protection a non-polarised lens can’t.

How do I look after my Avulux lenses?

Rinse your lenses under cool water to remove dust and debris, then dry them gently with a clean microfibre or lint-free cloth. Store them in a cool, dry place.

Avoid alcohol, general optical lens-cleaning sprays, harsh chemicals, household detergents and glass cleaners, and paper towels or tissues not made for lenses. A drop of mild washing-up liquid diluted in water is fine.
